Former Warriors man slams Wahs fans over criticism of star

There have been very few negatives this season for the New Zealand Warriors. Injuries have hampered the Wahs recently, but they are well placed to contend for their first Premiership come finals time.

The Kiwi club remain second on the ladder going into the business end of the season, having won 10 of their 15 NRL matches this campaign.

They were going toe-to-toe with the Panthers for top spot until their recent injury crisis, losing the likes of captain James Fisher-Harris and Leka Halasima alongside long-term absentees Tanah Boyd and Roger Tuivasa-Sheck.

Despite losing three of their last four games, the vibe around the Warriors remains positive, especially after going within two minutes of a famous victory over the red-hot Dolphins at Suncorp Stadium last Saturday.

The Wahs were met with appreciation for their display from media and fans alike, as they proved that they can compete with the best even with a growing injury toll to key men.

Anthony Gelling defends Adam Pompey amid fan criticism

One player who hasn’t escaped criticism following the game against the Dolphins though is centre Adam Pompey.

Wahs fans particularly have taken aim at Pompey and fellow centre Ali Leiataua for their recent performances, believing the centres are a current area of weakness within Adam Webster’s side.

But speaking on Sport Nation NZ, former Warriors centre Anthony Gelling believes that Pompey’s treatment is harsh as he defended the 27-year-old.

“I feel for him, because look at who he comes up against every week,” said Gelling. “It seems now that every centre in the comp is a top centre.

“I think it is the hardest position to be playing at the moment. You think about Adam Pompey for the Wahs, look at who he has to play against each week.

“You are playing against Latrell Mitchell, Stephen Crighton, Kotoni Staggs, Bradman Best, Casey McLean, Herbie Farnworth. Like, look at the roster he is up against every week.

“I think Pompey holds his own. I think he is underrated. Fans are wanting a new centre, but who is off contract? I think he is very underrated.”
