Latrell Mitchell is heading for the open market as things stand.
Although he has made it clear he wants to remain at the Rabbitohs, the club are cautious about offering him a new deal.
Perth Bears have been strongly linked with the 29-year-old, and the club are hoping to attract the star to the West.
Mal Meninga’s side are willing to offer him a deal worth $1.7 million a season to tempt him away from Sydney.
Mitchell has struggled with injuries over the last three seasons, and he hopes to be fit for the 2027 campaign after the Rugby League World Cup.
The full-back has recently spoken on his future and said: “I’ll ring Wayne. For me, just focusing on camp [World Cup] is most important.
“I’ve got a different colour on to the Rabbitohs, so for me, it’s all about this camp and focusing on that.”
The comment highlights how up in the air the situation is with the barnstorming back, with his future not going to be finalised anytime soon. If there was any doubt in him going to market, these comments essentially confirm it.
The Rabbitohs not only have Mitchell’s contract to resolve, but they are also in discussions with Cody Walker.
NRL clubs are all battling with salary cap restraints, which could put pressure on the Rabbitohs over what they offer to players.
If Latrell impressed in the World Cup and returns to Souths in good shape, then the Bunnies could speed up the process of offering him a new deal.
The club wants to ensure he can stay fit for a full season and that what they pay him is worth it.
