Brisbane Broncos are close to agreeing to a $4 million contract, which would be a major boost for the club.

The Broncos are preparing for their post-Payne Haas era, alongside Adam Reynolds’ retirement.

The two stars will leave a huge hole in the squad from an experience perspective, with one player ready to step up.

Xavier Willison is closing in on a brand new contract with the Broncos, worth $4 million.

The deal would be across three seasons, with the potential for a fourth.

There was speculation Willison could join Haas in leaving Brisbane for South Sydney, but that move will not materialise.

On taking the step into leadership, Willison said: “It sounds a bit surreal to think I’m starting to grow into that leadership role at the Broncos in the forwards.

“We’ve still got ‘Patty’ (Pat Carrigan) and ‘Barny’ (Mitch Barnett) coming, so they’ll be the big dogs, but I’m just happy to lead when I can on the field and hopefully help the younger boys.”

The 24-year-old has faced injury troubles in his career, but the past two campaigns have seen him really kick on and come into his own.

His eye-catching displays have seemingly earned him a new contract with the Broncos, and it is thoroughly deserved.

Now, Brisbane will be hoping he can take a further step forward and push the club back to where they want to be, which is towards the top of the ladder.
