Nathan Cleary is set to become the biggest name on the NRL transfer market after his serious leg injuries delayed contract talks with Penrith.

The superstar halfback is contracted until the end of 2027 but is now increasingly likely to become available to rival clubs when the November 1 negotiating window opens.

According to Fox Sports, Cleary’s management has put contract discussions on hold while he recovers from two operations following Penrith’s preliminary final loss to Newcastle.

The 28-year-old suffered a serious fracture and dislocation of his left ankle, as well as a broken bone in his right foot. His immediate priority is getting fit for the start of the 2027 season rather than negotiating a new deal.

That could create a huge opportunity for rival clubs, particularly the PNG Chiefs. The NRL’s newest franchise has already been linked with a four-year offer worth $6 million, or $1.5 million a season.

However, Cleary’s next contract could reportedly be worth as much as $1.7 million annually. The Chiefs would also have a significant advantage because of tax concessions available to players based in Papua New Guinea.

Penrith remain confident of keeping their star playmaker, despite the delay. Panthers chief executive Matt Cameron confirmed the club had held early discussions with Cleary’s manager, George Mimis.

“We have had very preliminary conversations with Nathan’s manager (George Mimis) which have been positive thus far,” Cameron told The Daily Telegraph.

The Panthers also face important contract decisions involving Isaah Yeo, Liam Martin and Moses Leota. Keeping Cleary will be their biggest priority, particularly after losing several established players in recent seasons.

Cleary has been the driving force behind Penrith’s incredible success and remains one of the game’s most valuable players.

There is no indication he wants to leave the Panthers, but his injury has created an unexpected twist in negotiations.

And if he reaches November 1 without signing a new deal, rival clubs will finally have the chance to make their move.
