The Brisbane Broncos could face one of the biggest salary cap decisions in NRL history as they look to secure Reece Walsh’s long-term future.

The star fullback is already contracted until the end of 2029, but Brisbane are reportedly considering a massive extension that could keep him at Red Hill until 2035.

According to The Daily Telegraph, new recruitment boss Peter O’Sullivan has made keeping Walsh at the club a major priority.

Walsh currently earns a reported $1.1 million a season, but his next contract could be worth considerably more.

With the NRL salary cap expected to increase following the next broadcast deal, there is even speculation he could eventually become the game’s first $2 million-a-season player.

However, paying one player that much money would create some difficult decisions for the Broncos.

Brisbane already have significant money committed to several of their biggest stars.

Ezra Mam is contracted until the end of 2029, while Patrick Carrigan, Kotoni Staggs and Jordan Riki are also on long-term deals.

The Broncos must also consider how much they can afford to spend on emerging players and future recruitment targets.

A huge Walsh contract could make it harder to retain every player they want.

There is also the question of whether any NRL player is worth $2 million a season.

At his best, Walsh is one of the most dangerous attacking players in the competition.

His speed, creativity and ability to turn a game in seconds make him extremely difficult to replace.

He was also a key figure in Brisbane’s 2025 premiership triumph.

But the Broncos finished 14th in 2026, showing that even a team packed with representative stars can struggle.

That makes finding the right balance across the entire squad even more important.

O’Sullivan has experience negotiating major contracts, having helped secure Dylan Brown’s record-breaking deal with Newcastle.

His next challenge could be even bigger.

Brisbane would love Walsh to finish his career at the club, but keeping him could eventually come at a significant cost.

The question is whether the Broncos can afford to pay their biggest star $2 million a season and still build a premiership-winning team around him.
