The PNG Chiefs are preparing for another major recruitment push as they build their squad for their historic NRL debut in 2028.

With the November 1 contract deadline approaching, coach Willie Peters will soon have more opportunities to negotiate with players coming off contract in 2027.

The Chiefs have already secured several big names, including Jarome Luai, Brian To’o and Alex Johnston, but there are still plenty of positions to fill.

Here are five players the Chiefs should consider targeting.

5. Briton Nikora

The Cronulla back-rower would bring experience, toughness and attacking ability to the Chiefs.

Nikora has established himself as one of the NRL’s most consistent edge forwards and would provide valuable support for the club’s younger players.

With his future beyond 2027 uncertain, PNG could be an interesting option.

4. Hudson Young

Young would be a huge addition to the Chiefs’ forward pack.

The Canberra star is an aggressive runner, strong defender and proven State of Origin player.

Peters has already expressed interest in signing Young, making him one of the more interesting names to watch.

3. Xavier Coates

Coates was born in Papua New Guinea and would be an enormous signing for the new franchise.

The Melbourne winger has developed into one of the competition’s best finishers.

The Chiefs have previously been linked to Coates and his younger brothers, Phillip and Basil.

Bringing the family together in PNG could give the club a strong recruitment advantage.

2. AJ Brimson

Brimson could solve several problems for the Chiefs.

The Gold Coast star can play fullback, five-eighth or in the centres, giving Peters plenty of flexibility.

PNG have already held discussions about signing him, although his long-term Titans contract remains an obstacle.

His speed and experience would make him an important addition.

1. Cooper Bai

Few players would be more popular with PNG supporters than Cooper Bai.

The young Titans forward is the son of Kumuls legend Marcus Bai and has already attracted significant interest from the Chiefs.

Bai recently travelled to Port Moresby after receiving permission to explore his options beyond 2027.

He could become a key part of the club’s future forward pack.

For the Chiefs, signing Bai would be about more than football. It would give the new franchise another strong connection to Papua New Guinea’s rugby league history.
