Xavier Coates could become one of the biggest names on the NRL transfer market when rival clubs are allowed to approach him from November 1.
The Melbourne Storm winger is contracted until the end of 2027, meaning he could be available for the 2028 season.
Coates has developed into one of the competition’s best finishers since leaving Brisbane in 2021.
His speed, aerial ability and experience at State of Origin level would make him an attractive signing for almost any club.
Here are five potential destinations.
Sydney Roosters
The Roosters are always looking to strengthen their backline, and Coates would bring genuine match-winning ability.
With Daniel Tupou approaching the end of his career, the Roosters could see Coates as a long-term replacement on the wing.
Perth Bears
The NRL’s newest club will be looking to build a competitive squad, and signing an established Queensland representative would be a major statement.
Perth could potentially offer Coates a lucrative contract and the opportunity to become one of the faces of the franchise.
Brisbane Broncos
A return to Brisbane would be an interesting possibility.
Coates made his NRL debut with the Broncos in 2019 before moving to Melbourne in search of a fresh challenge.
Playing alongside Reece Walsh and Kotoni Staggs could give Brisbane one of the competition’s most dangerous backlines.
However, salary cap pressure could make a deal difficult.
Melbourne Storm
Staying at Melbourne remains a strong possibility.
Coates has become a key member of the Storm’s backline and has enjoyed some of his best football under Craig Bellamy.
Melbourne would have every reason to make retaining him a priority.
While rival clubs could offer more money, the Storm’s successful environment may prove difficult to leave.
PNG Chiefs
Coates was born in Papua New Guinea, making him an obvious recruitment target for the Chiefs ahead of their 2028 debut.
His arrival would be enormous for rugby league in PNG and could help the new franchise attract other established NRL stars.
The Chiefs may also be prepared to offer a significant contract to secure one of the game’s best wingers.
Coates has not publicly indicated that he wants to leave Melbourne, but the opportunity to represent his birthplace could make PNG an attractive option.
If the Chiefs want a marquee signing to build their backline around, Coates would be an ideal candidate.
