Wayde Egan’s decision to extend his contract with the Warriors is great news for the club, but it could have major consequences for two of their young hookers.

The 29-year-old has signed a one-year extension, keeping him at the Warriors until the end of 2028.

Egan enjoyed an outstanding 2026 season, winning the Dally M Hooker of the Year award after playing 25 matches.

Warriors coach Andrew Webster was thrilled to secure one of his most important players.

“Wayde is brilliant, an elite hooker who’s so smart in his all-round game,” Webster said.

However, the signing raises questions about the futures of Sam Healey and Makaia Tafua.

Healey is contracted until the end of 2027 but has reportedly been given permission to explore opportunities elsewhere.

The St George Illawarra Dragons have already been linked with the 24-year-old, who could struggle to secure a regular starting position while Egan remains at the club.

Healey has shown plenty of promise since joining the Warriors from Cronulla, but Egan’s extension makes his path to the No.9 jersey even more difficult.

Youngster Makaia Tafua could also face a longer wait for regular first-grade opportunities.

The promising hooker made his NRL debut in 2026 and is regarded as one of the club’s emerging talents.

However, Egan’s experience and outstanding form mean he is likely to remain Webster’s first-choice hooker for the next two seasons.

Warriors recruitment boss Andrew McFadden said Egan’s influence on younger players was another reason to keep him.

“His experience is invaluable helping the next generation of hookers coming through our pathways system,” McFadden said.

For the Warriors, keeping Egan was an easy decision.

But for Healey and Tafua, the challenge of breaking into the starting side has become even greater.

And with rival clubs searching for quality hookers, the Warriors could face some difficult decisions ahead.
