The Brisbane Broncos face another important contract decision as they look to secure the future of rising forward Xavier Willison.

The 24-year-old is contracted until the end of 2027 but has yet to officially sign a new deal, despite months of negotiations.

Willison reportedly rejected an extension in July that would have kept him at Red Hill until the end of 2030.

He has since changed managers, joining Ahmad Merhi, who also represents former Broncos teammate Payne Haas.

Haas will join South Sydney in 2027, leaving Brisbane determined to avoid losing another important member of their forward pack.

Willison has developed into one of the club’s most valuable players and is seen as a natural replacement for Haas.

He enjoyed an outstanding 2026 season, winning Brisbane’s Paul Morgan Medal as the club’s player of the year.

His performances have also increased his value, with rival clubs expected to show interest if he becomes available.

However, there are encouraging signs for Broncos supporters.

Recent reports suggest Willison has verbally agreed to a new deal worth around $4 million, although the contract has not been finalised.

The New Zealand international is reportedly waiting until November 1 before signing, with the timing linked to his change of management.

For Brisbane, the priority should be keeping him rather than risking another drawn-out contract battle.

The Broncos have already lost Haas and cannot afford to lose another young forward capable of leading their pack for years to come.

Willison’s ability to play in several forward positions makes him even more valuable to coach Michael Maguire.

With Peter O’Sullivan taking charge of recruitment, securing Willison’s future should be one of the club’s biggest priorities.

Brisbane have invested years in his development. Now they need to make sure another club doesn’t enjoy the rewards.
