Matt Burton could become one of the most interesting players on the NRL transfer market, and the Brisbane Broncos might be an attractive destination.
The Bulldogs star is contracted until the end of 2027, meaning rival clubs will soon be able to negotiate with him for the 2028 season.
But where would he fit into a Brisbane side already packed with attacking talent?
The most obvious position is five-eighth, where Ezra Mam is currently the Broncos’ first-choice option.
Burton would bring a different style of play, particularly with his powerful kicking game, strong running ability and experience in big matches.
His towering bombs could also give Brisbane another attacking weapon alongside Reece Walsh.
However, replacing Mam would be a huge decision.
The 23-year-old is contracted until the end of 2029 and remains an important part of Brisbane’s long-term plans.
Another possibility would be playing Burton in the centres.
The former Penrith premiership winner has already proved he can perform in that position, including at State of Origin level.
With Kotoni Staggs established on one side and Dane Gagai joining the club in 2027, Burton could provide another option as Brisbane plans for the future.
He could also offer valuable cover in the halves.
Jonah Pezet arrives next season as the likely long-term replacement for retiring captain Adam Reynolds, while Ben Hunt and Tom Duffy provide further options.
Burton’s versatility would give coach Michael Maguire plenty of flexibility when selecting his backline.
There would also be the question of money.
Brisbane already has significant salary cap commitments, and signing Burton would require careful planning.
For now, there is no confirmed move linking Burton to the Broncos.
But if he becomes available, Brisbane would have good reason to consider him.
