Joseph Manu twist set to hand Warriors dream signing

New Zealand Warriors could yet land the dream signing of Joseph Manu despite the Kiwi touring the PNG Chiefs’ facilities in Port Moresby.

It was revealed by the Sydney Morning Herald on Monday that Manu and his family were in the capital of Papua New Guinea to seal a move to the Chiefs for the 2028 season.

Despite Manu’s New Zealand roots, having played for the Kiwis 16 times, the financial power of the Chiefs has seen them surge clear in the race for the 30-year-old.

The NRL’s newest franchise club have the huge advantage of tax-free money to attract players to PNG, with Manu’s hefty salary putting the New Zealand Warriors out of the running for his services long term.

Manu is on a reported $1.6 million per season at French Rugby side Racing 92, with the Chiefs expected to table a similar offer to bring him to Papua New Guinea for 2028.

Despite this, it has emerged that all is not lost for the Warriors in securing a deal for Manu, whose contract at Racing 92 ends in June 2027 when the rugby season finishes.

The Wahs are now the favourites to land Manu on a short-term deal for the second half of the 2027 season, allowing him to get back up to speed with the NRL ahead of his move to the Chiefs.

PNG’s hierarchy are supportive of the move despite the risk of injury, knowing they will benefit from Manu’s chance to familiarise himself with rugby league again after three years out of the sport.

It would also be a dream move for Hamilton-born Manu, who will welcome the opportunity to return to his home country and play out a memorable season with the Wahs.

Andrew Webster confirmed the club were interested in signing Manu during a recent press conference, with the Warriors coach admitting they are in the market for a top-class centre.

Manu fits that bill perfectly and though it would only be a stop-gap stint in Auckland, it’s a signing that would create huge excitement among the Wahs fans as the popularity of the club continues to grow.
