Trent Robinson breaks silence on Sam Walker amid Broncos links

Sydney Roosters head coach Trent Robinson has opened up on the future of star player Sam Walker, who has been linked with a return to Brisbane Broncos.

Walker is out of contract at the end of the 2027 campaign, with the Queensland star available to speak to rivals on November 1 if he doesn’t sign an extension by then.

The Roosters had initially stalled on talks due to their interest in Nathan Cleary, but have switched up their plans after Walker’s State of Origin success.

Walker won the match-of-the-match award in Game 2 of the 2026 series, and easily could have landed the same gong in the opener.

There have been reports that the Roosters’ reaction to Walker’s ascent has been to offer the 24-year-old a massive ten-year contract, worth $1.35m per season.

A former Broncos academy player, Walker has thrived since moving to Sydney, but previous reports of a stalled contract led to suggestions the Broncos were interested in bringing the playmaker back to Suncorp Stadium.

There has now been a huge update on Walker’s future, with Roosters boss Robinson shutting down the rumours of a big deal, and giving his verdict on the scrum-half’s future.

On the mammoth contract offer, Robinson said: “I don’t know where that’s come from. That’s never been mentioned to me at all by their management or us.

“My view is that you don’t need to sign that long enough [of a deal] to be a lifer, [at one] club.

“It’s not difficult. His management and the club will work on length and terms [of the contract].”

While Robinson has played down rumours of a massive deal for Walker, he still praised the player and acknowledged his importance to the Roosters.

Robinson added: “He’s been here since 2019, since he’s been a kid, since he’s left school.

“It’s been pretty clear the development pathways since he’s been here, and he’s still young.

“Definitely (Walker is a generational talent). We believe in Sammy.”
